Your Guide to Wedding & Engagement Ring EtiquetteBack to blog
SP Green • November 30th, 2025 • Your Guide to Wedding & Engagement Ring Etiquette
Choosing your engagement and wedding rings is a truly special part of your love story. But once you have the rings in hand or on finger, questions often come up. Which hand does the engagement ring go on? When do you take it off? Should you wear both every day?
At SP Green, we’ve helped countless couples find the perfect rings and just as many have asked us about the “rules” for wearing them. The good news is that while there are long standing traditions, today’s ring etiquette is more flexible than ever. It's about what feels right for you.
Here’s a helpful guide to answer some of the most common questions about engagement and wedding ring etiquette.
Which Hand Does the Engagement Ring Go On?
Traditionally in the UK and much of the Western world, the engagement ring is worn on the ring finger of the left hand. That’s the fourth finger from the thumb.
This tradition dates back to the ancient Romans, who believed a vein known as vena amoris or “vein of love” ran directly from that finger to the heart. While the anatomy isn’t quite accurate, the sentiment remains timeless.
What About the Wedding Ring?
On your wedding day, the wedding ring is typically placed on the left ring finger first, closest to the heart. To do this, many brides and grooms will switch their engagement ring to the right hand during the ceremony, allowing the wedding ring to be placed directly on the left hand. Afterwards, the engagement ring is moved back to sit above the wedding band.
Some people like to have the wedding band closest to the heart as a symbol of commitment. Others may wear their rings in reverse or even on separate hands. It’s entirely a personal choice.
Can I Wear Just One Ring?
Of course. Some people prefer the simplicity of wearing just their wedding ring after the ceremony. Others choose to wear the engagement ring on special occasions only, especially if it features a more delicate or elaborate design.
There’s no rule that says you have to wear both all the time. Whether you’re working with your hands, going to the gym, or just want something lighter day to day, it’s perfectly acceptable to adapt how you wear your rings to suit your lifestyle.

Should the Rings Match?
Matching rings can be a beautiful symbol of unity but they don’t have to be identical. Many couples opt for rings that complement each other even if they’re different in design or metal. Some may choose bands with similar finishes, shapes or engraving while others go completely different but personal to each partner’s style.
What matters most is that the rings feel meaningful and comfortable for each of you. At SP Green, we offer a range of styles from classic to contemporary to help you find rings that feel perfectly you.
Can I Stack Other Rings with My Wedding Set?
Absolutely. Ring stacking has become a popular trend and it’s a great way to celebrate milestones or anniversaries. Many people add eternity bands or gemstone rings to mark special occasions or simply to change up their look.
Just be sure to choose styles that sit well together and feel secure when worn as a set. Our in store team can help you design a stack that’s beautiful, comfortable and made to last.
Do Men Wear Engagement Rings?
Traditionally, men in the UK haven’t worn engagement rings but that’s starting to change. More grooms to be are embracing engagement rings as a symbol of commitment and we say why not
Whether it’s a classic band, a signet style ring or something with a subtle diamond, there’s no reason men shouldn’t have an engagement ring too if it feels meaningful.
What If I Need to Resize My Ring?
It’s completely normal for your fingers to change over time or for your ring to need a little adjustment. If your engagement or wedding ring no longer fits properly, don’t worry. Resizing is a straightforward process.
At SP Green, we offer expert resizing services to make sure your ring fits comfortably and securely for years to come.
