Choosing The Ideal Engagement Rings.

If you’re looking for the perfect engagement ring, are you aware of the different aspects of that all-important diamond that represents its true value?  Every diamond is unique – this is why they’re special, rare and used in engagement rings – but there are a number of different factors that determine the quality and cost of each piece. These are known in the industry as the four C’s.

When looking at diamonds, it’s always best to look at the colour, clarity, cut and carat of a piece in order to find its worth. Diamond colour is all about what you can’t see. Diamonds are valued by how little colouris present – the less colour, the higher their value.

Diamond clarity refers to the absence of inclusions and blemishes. Diamonds without these birthmarks are rare, and rarity affects a diamond’s value.

Cut quality is the factor that fuels a diamond’s fire, sparkle and brilliance. The allure and beauty of a particular diamond depends more on cut quality than anything else.

Diamonds and other gemstones are weighed in metric carats: one carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Because even a fraction of a carat can make a considerable difference in cost, precision is crucial. In the diamond industry, weight is often measured to the hundred thousandths of a carat, and rounded to a hundredth of a carat.

The Different Cuts of Diamonds.

Whether you’re looking for one for your partner, or for one yourself, it can be really difficult to pick the right ring. With such a wide range of choice presented, thanks to the different styles and shapes, it’s no surprise that many people like to take their time in choosing their ideal ring. Being such an important (and expensive!) decision to make, you should be aware of every aspect, so here are some of the diamond cuts available:

  • Round Brilliant Cut. The most popular cut of diamond – it’s estimated that more than 75% of diamonds sold around the world have been Round cut. The shape of a Brilliant cut resembles a cone-like shape and thanks to its numerous facets, provides a large amount of light through the top of the diamond. If you’re looking for a traditional-looking diamond that can provide brilliance and sparkle, a round cut diamond will be perfect.

  • Princess Cut. Although a relatively new style of cut, Princess cut engagement rings were created in the 1960’s and quickly gained popularity as an alternative to the more traditional Round cut. The face-up shape of the diamond is cut in a square or rectangular shape, making the diamond look like an inverted pyramid, due to its four bevelled sides.Sometimes known as a square modified brilliant cut, the Princess cut is utterly unique and offers a moremodern twist to an engagement ring.

  • Emerald Cut. Cut in the same manner as emerald gemstones; a rectangular step-cut with cropped corners that produces facets that are arranged parallel to every edge of the stone. Quite simply, an emerald cut diamond gives off an elegant, understated sparkle. This type of cut is perhaps the rarest out there; so wearing one would make for a different, more interesting look.

  • Radiant Cut. This particular cut of diamond is cuboid-shaped, has lightly-trimmed corners, 70 facets and mixes the elegance of an Emerald cut diamond, with the brilliance of the Round cut. If you’re looking for a rare, unique cut that contains many of the elements of other types of cuts, then a Radiant cut will be ideal.

Whichever cut of diamond, style or colour of ring you may have in mind, always ensure that you take plenty of time in examining as many rings you can; you never know, something else may catch your eye. Happy browsing!
